After 30 YEARS, the incredible Dearne Big Band are finally returning to the Empress Building, Mexborough!
And this isn't just another Christmas concert — it's a chance to step back in time, enjoy the magic of traditional Christmas music and celebrate the return of a much-loved local band to a venue filled with memories.
The Dearne Big Band are delighted to return to the historic Empress Building in Mexborough, their first performance here in over 30 years. This long-awaited homecoming adds an extra sense of occasion to the night, marking a special moment in the band’s story as they bring their unmistakable Christmas sound back to a venue filled with memories, music, and tradition.
The Dearne Big Band will be joined by the Dearne Valley Singers and will be bringing the magic of Christmas to life with its unmistakable blend of lush big band harmonies, velvet smooth vocals, and timeless festive favourites.
Formed in 1978 and now one of South Yorkshire’s most enduring big band ensembles, the group has built a reputation for rich musicality, and a swing sound that transforms any venue into a winter wonderland.
The Christmas concert wraps decades of musical tradition in a sparkling seasonal bow. Audiences can look forward to beautifully crafted arrangements of classics such as
The Christmas Song (ChestnutsRoasting on an Open Fire),
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,
White Christmas,
Baby It’s Cold Outside, and many more.
With warm brass, smooth saxophones, and the charm of the band’s featured vocalists,these beloved songs are brought to life with both nostalgia and fresh festive energy.
To enrich the evening with even greater seasonal variety, the Dearne Valley Singers, the choir from the same organisation, will present their own beautifully curated Christmas set. Their programme features a selection of cherished carols and seasonal songs including
The First Noel,
The Holly and the Ivy,
O Holy Night,
and O Little Town of Bethlehem, to name but a few.
Their presence brings a beautiful choral contrast to the big band sound, ensuring the evening flows with warmth, tradition, and musical diversity.
